Rethinking Tailings Management:
A Workshop on Novel Technologies and Integrated Approaches
Executive Summary:
The mining industry faces ever-increasing pressure to enhance the safety, environmental performance, and social acceptance of tailings storage facilities (TSFs). Traditional wet tailings impoundments present significant technical, environmental, and social challenges. This proposal outlines a one-day in-person workshop designed to critically evaluate and promote the adoption of alternative tailings management strategies, focusing on filtered tailings, commingling, and other novel technologies. The workshop adopted an integrated approach, considering technical feasibility, environmental benefits, social implications, and economics.

The Tailings Center’s Summer Symposium for member companies, invited guests, and member university personnel.

On July 29-30, 2024, the University of Arizona in Tucson hosted the 2024 Tailings Center Summer Research Symposium, a significant event focused on developing a shared strategic vision for federal funding in tailings research. Experts from the Colorado School of Mines, Colorado State University, and the University of Arizona came together to showcase ongoing research and examine emerging trends in tailings and mine waste management. Through insightful presentations, strategic discussions, and collaborative planning, attendees successfully crafted a compelling vision that will guide a 2024 NSF Industry/University Cooperative Research Center (IUCRC) proposal and shape future federal funding efforts. The event began with an informal evening gathering on July 29th, followed by a full day of productive sessions and an evening dinner on July 30th.

Undergraduate and graduate students from Colorado School of Mines, Colorado State University and University of Arizona participated in a facilitated discussion sharing best practices from previous internships. Eighty percent of the students participated were females demonstrating the delivery of a future diverse workforce to tailings and mine waste management companies.

This discussion was hosted by The Tailing’s Center’s Joe Scalia (SCU). Special thanks to Katherine King (Mines), Cara Clements (Mines), Shayne Zadro (UA), Sam Jacob (CSU), and Emily Jagerhorn (CSU) for participating in the discussion panel.

Summary of ideas for internships coming soon in the Member’s Center.

Importance of Soft Skills & Emotional Intelligence in Tailings Management

Christopher Hatton, WSP/Golder Consulting, recently conducted an engaging session with students and guests. Hatton emphasized the significance of complementing technical expertise with essential non-technical skills such as leadership, communication, and teamwork. He underscored the pivotal role these skills play in propelling individuals forward in the field of tailings and mine waste management. More information available here.

Building a Tailings Workforce Pipeline in Higher Education

The networking reception and day long facilitated workshop provided opportunities for Tailings Center members to interact with university students, staff, and faculty. The workshop deepened our understanding of the broad needs, available levers, and identified efforts that can be undertaken by the Tailings Center to build a sustainable undergraduate and graduate student tailings workforce pipeline.
