Rethinking Tailings Management:
A Workshop on Novel Technologies and Integrated Approaches
Executive Summary:
The mining industry faces ever-increasing pressure to enhance the safety, environmental performance, and social acceptance of tailings storage facilities (TSFs). Traditional wet tailings impoundments present significant technical, environmental, and social challenges. This proposal outlines a one-day in-person workshop designed to critically evaluate and promote the adoption of alternative tailings management strategies, focusing on filtered tailings, commingling, and other novel technologies. The workshop will adopt an integrated approach, considering technical feasibility, environmental benefits, social implications, and economics. We will foster a collaborative environment for knowledge sharing and the development of actionable strategies for a more sustainable future in tailings management.
